The Omniscience of God: Wisdom
The Omniscience of God can
be described as one of his communicable attributes. In this instance, I
desire to look into one aspect of his mental attributes, which is his
wisdom.
In
virtue of his wisdom, God chooses the highest ends and uses the fittest means
to accomplish them. In other words, He
always chooses the best goals and the best means to those goals. This is more than God knowing all things, but
his decision's related to his actions are always wise decisions - they will
always bring about the best results, from God's perspective, and the best
results from the best possible means.
Wisdom
is not invented conceptions, or harmony of theories with theories; but is
humble obedience of the mind to the reception of facts that are revealed in
things by God. Thus man's wisdom,
obedience, and faith are all names for different aspects of the same
thing. Wisdom in God is the moral choice
which makes truth and holiness supreme.
It is not enough to mean well.
Our methods must take some account of the nature of things if they are
to succeed. We cannot produce well-being
by law.
In
scripture, God's wisdom is affirmed
generally, in Romans 16:7, as the only wise God; Job 9:4 God is wise in heart;
and in Psalm 104:24, God's wisdom is seen in creation. In addition, God's wisdom is seen in
redemption. Christ is the wisdom of God
to those who are called (1
Corinthians 1:24,30), and the cross seen as foolishness to those who reject it
(1 Corinthians 1:18-20).
As
the Apostle Paul expressed in Romans 11:33, Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom
and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His
judgments and His ways past finding out!
What we may view is something so simple, the gospel message, he
understood as an amazing plan of God.
This passage so aptly expresses God's plan of redemption. God's wisdom produced such a message
understandable to children. Aren't we
all like that?
God's
wisdom unites those from different backgrounds and cultures to become united in
Christ. Ephesians 3:6 states that we
(Gentiles) became fellow heirs, unified in one body of Christ, a mystery hidden
for ages in God who created all things (Ephesians 3:9) so plainly for us to
understand the true fellowship of His person, as expressed in us, through unity
in Christ. That is He, has brought, can
bring groups of people from unique, diverse, racial, ethnic, economic, and
cultural backgrounds to become members of one body. This becomes an expression of wisdom to
fulfill His purpose (Ephesians 3:10).
Wisdom to create, which He can only do, to produce oneness. This oneness
can put the Church in the forefront to breakdown societal divisions.
God's
wisdom is also expressed in our lives individually. Romans 8:29 says, "For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son,
that He might be the firstborn among many brethren." Here Paul affirms that God does work wisely
in all the things that come into our lives, and that through all things he
advances us toward the goal of conformity to the image of Christ. God moves us toward the ultimate goal to be
like Christ, and to bring him glory. So,
in those times of discouragement, his wisdom, we are his, and that he is
working wisely in our lives.
We
must also remember that God's wisdom is both communicable and incommunicable. James 1:5 expresses if there is a lack, we
can ask God, who gives generously. This
wisdom is for us to live a life pleasing to God. Wisdom should produce a reverence of the Lord
(Psalm 111:10; Proverbs 9:10), which motivates us to obedience and holiness. The possession of wisdom from God will result
in humility (James 3:14-18) A person who
is wise in God walks with a dependence on and a desire to exalt Him. However, Romans 11:33 reminds us that we can
never fully share God's wisdom. There
will be times when we will not be able to understand why certain things happen. In those instances, we must truly trust and
have faith in his wisdom.
